A DIY Disaster

So in the fall of last year, my husband and I purchased our FIRST house together!  In the all too long renting years, I often found myself day dreaming about the “must have” and the “would like to have”  components of the first house. It was not uncommon for myself to be watching DIY Network or HGTV just to get some ideas. I am not a big TV watcher unless it is one of these two channels. Personally, I liked the DIY renovation shows. If something went wrong in a renovation, I liked that episode even better! Ha. While I enjoy home projects, and DIY when it comes to knowledge about what to do to accomplish the project, I know little about how tools work. I am the idea girl and the implementer.

In the search to find the perfect house for us, it was a fast process. We looked at houses that needed some cosmetic changes and minor renovations. I’m not gonna lie, I was a little eager and hopeful of finding a house that could be “made our own” with doing some changes. One house that we were looking into purchasing had good structure, it needed all new paint and flooring, but I was ok with that. Fast forward 10 houses and a couple different towns later, we were able to find the perfect house. It had everything on the “must have” list and some components of the ” would like to have ” list as well.  Minimal painting needed done, some things that I would like to do, but no rush on completion. One of the things that I wanted to do was take out some outdated bushes.

I am blessed when it comes to having a handy brother. A handy brother that owns a skid loader is even better!

All along the side of our house / driveway were bushes. Ugly, overgrown, can’t open the car door without climbing over a bush to get out of the car bushes.  I attempted to cut back the bushes more than usual, but that kinda backfired on me. They they looked like giant clusters of twigs!

So I recruited the brother to come and rip out the bushes. I have no clue how to operate a skid loader, nor do I ever want to learn. The engineering behind it to prevent it from tipping over is a mystery to me. So while watching him and pondering the fact that the little skid loader is whipping around in my driveway, the bucket of the skid loader is getting closer and closer to the side of my house. Faster than I can catch Jonathon’s attention, the bucket of the skid loader, made it’s way into the side of my house! Broke the siding, broke the board underneath the siding. THEN I was able to get his attention! Obviously, it was too late to prevent any DIY disasters!

I thought for sure taking out the bushes would be a fairly simple job, I am nervous to see what the next home project is like! Since the DIY disaster, Jonathon came and put new siding into place on the side of the house. If you ask him, he would probably say that I freaked out about the situation more than needed. But there was a hole in the side of my house! Who wouldn’t freak out? Thankfully it didn’t break my window.  He did a good job, nobody would even know what happened if they did not know the story!

What DIY disasters have you had happen to you? Do you attempt projects at home, or hire somebody else to complete them for you?
